My internet is not working, what do I do?
Sometimes, the internet goes down. Here's how to try and fix it: Find the internet box: It's usually a small box with blinking lights, inside the server cage. Unplug it, wait, plug it back in: Just like a TV! Give it a minute to turn back on. Still not working? Find the other box, it's silver colored might have more lights with cables plugged into it. Unplug it, wait, and plug it back in. If that doesn't work, call your manager or the IT support number.
Step 1: Reboot the ISP Circuit
- Locate the Modem: Identify the modem provided by your ISP. This device connects your network to the internet.
- Power Cycle:
- Unplug the power cable from the modem.
- Wait 30-60 seconds to allow the device to fully power down.
- Plug the power cable back in.
- Observe Lights: Check the modem's lights for indications of power and connectivity.
- Wait for Connection: Allow several minutes for the modem to re-establish a connection with your ISP.
Step 2: Reboot the Firewall
- Access the Firewall: This is a silver colored small Cisco device inside your server cage.
- Reboot Options:
- Locate the power cable behind the device.
- Pull the cable out to shut down the firewall.
- Wait 30 seconds, then plug the power back in to turn it back on.
- Monitor Firewall Status: Check the firewall's status light. It will change colors while rebooting and eventually when online will be at a solid white colored status light.
Step 3: Reboot the Network Switch
- Identify the Switch: Locate the network switch that connects your devices to the network. This device is inside your server cage
- Power Cycle:
- Find the power cable behind the device and pull it, this will shut down the device.
-
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug the power cable back in to turn the device back on. This will take a few minutes to boot back online.
- Check Switch Lights: Observe the switch's lights to confirm that it is powering on and that ports are active. You will notice the status light as amber/orange while offline and then a solid white color when online.
Step 4: Verify Network Connectivity
- Test Internet Access: Open a web browser and try to access a website to confirm internet connectivity.
- Check Internal Network: Test connectivity between devices on your internal network (e.g., ping another computer - this will be done by your IT Department).
- Application Testing: If you have specific applications that rely on the network, test them on your tablets to ensure they are functioning correctly.
